BIDDEFORD, Maine – Nine second-half goals from the University of New England women's soccer team allowed the Nor'easters to run away with a 12-0 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington at Hazard Field on Wednesday night as UNE turned its highest single-game scoring effort in program history.
UNE's previous single-game record came in an 11-0 win over Regis nearly 25 years ago to the day (Sept. 26, 2001). The Nor'easters (5-3) already approached double digits once this season, having defeated Lasell, 9-3, on Sunday, Sept. 6. Entering Wednesday evening, only six teams in Division III had scored 12 or more goals in a game this season.
Emily Talbot's hat trick was the first of her career, and her second seven-point game of the season, matching her two-goal, three-assist in the win over Lasell. Reagan Dillon was UNE's only other multigoal scorer, netting one in each half.
First career goals came from
Rosalie DeSantis,
Reese Gordon and
Bella Hanover – all in the second half.
It wasn't until the 25th minute that UNE was on the board with
Lexy Brodeur's goal, but that gave way to two more late first-half tallies, with the first coming from Talbot in the 33rd minute and the next from Dillon in the 44th.
In the second half, the Nor'easters never went more than 10 minutes without a goal, evenly spacing out their nine scores over the final 45 minutes.
Jill Hodgson had the first goal of the second half in the 50th minute, then Talbot scored two of UNE's next three, with a goal from
Ailey Mann sandwiched between.
Dillon posted her second of the game in the 63rd minute,
Charlotte Jessuck followed in the 65th, then came the trio of first career goals beginning with DeSantis in the 74th.
UMF (0-6) was held without a shot on goal, and its only shot of the evening hit the crossbar midway through the second half. The Nor'easters racked up 35 total shots and 21 shots on goal, along with 13 corners.
"It was good to see the team put together a complete 90 minutes," said head coach AJ Stueck. "I'm particularly pleased with the unselfish passing, as well as the shutout. It was great to see Rosalie, Reese and Bella score their first career goals. The team is now fully focused on the conference game this weekend."
UNE will visit Nichols on Saturday, Sept. 26 at noon.
