BRISTOL, R.I. -- Eva Wood negated a furious rally by the University of New England by scoring 1:43 into overtime, giving Roger Williams University a 4-3 Conference of New England (CNE) field hockey result at Bayside Field on Saturday (Sep. 12).
The only shot in the extra session made the difference, pushing the Hawks to 5-1 overall (1-0 CNE) and setting the Nor'easters back to 1-3 on the young season (0-1 CNE). Both Wood and Brodie Loveland (assist) factored in three of the four tallies for RWU.
The game wouldn't have surpassed 60 minutes if not for some late conversions for UNE, including a last-gasp penalty corner and goal by
Gianna Korisianos with a mere 11 seconds left in regulation.
Ella Reeves assisted on the score, which was less than four minutes after she scored her first collegiate goal with the help of Korisianos to make it 3-2 in the 57th minute. Those were the only two attempts by the visitors in the 4th quarter.
A 1-0 game at the half -- courtesy of Loveland (11th minute) -- was extended to 3-0 in the 3rd by Wood (33rd) and Loveland (41st), but the Nor'easters got on the board with 16 seconds remaining in the penultimate frame when Korisianos set up rookie
Corinne Ramunno for her first score.
The four points matched a career-best for Korisianos.
Riley Curtin made seven saves for UNE, which was out-shot by a 28-6 margin (11-4 on goal). Shae O'Neill made one stop on the other end for Roger Williams, but, after the shaky finish, Meili Raspante played in overtime.
The Nor'easters hit the road on Tuesday for a non-conference battle with No.6 Babson College.
