BIDDEFORD, Maine -- With a postseason spot on the line, Wentworth Institute of Technology captured both sides of a Conference of New England (CNE) softball doubleheader against the University of New England, 3-1 and 16-7, on Saturday (May 2) at Nor'easter Diamond.

The Leopards (15-24) needed to overcome deficits each time to improve to 11-9 in CNE action and snag the No.6 seed in the upcoming six-team conference championship. After the big offensive second game, Jenna Roche totaled six hits across the twinbill, and Kyla Igawa and Lauren Trostel supplied four hits apiece. Igawa also put up four runs batted in.

The Nor'easters conclude the year at 14-22 overall and 8-12 in league outings. Zofia Twarog accounted for a team-best three hits on the afternoon -- all doubles -- while Delaney Whitten and Fiona Casey connected for hits in both games. Whitten had three RBI on the day.

UNE held two Wentworth runners in place to get the last two outs in the 1st inning of GAME 1 (WIT 3-1), and then Whitten knocked in Twarog's first two-bagger to give the hosts an early edge [Watch].

The respective pitchers -- Kara MacDonald for UNE, and Julie Schriver for the Leopards -- plotted along effectively for most of the contest. MacDonald was aided by some timely defense behind her, as the Nor'easters assembled double plays in both the 5th and 6th frames to keep the visitors scoreless. First, it was a second and third situation with one out in the 5th, and a flyout to left fielder Adrianna Carsetti in foul territory turned into the end of the inning with a laser to catcher Emma Koenig for the tag at the plate [Watch]. The next time around, UNE wiped away a leadoff single when Twarog charged a short bunt and made the play in time to Emma Michaud covering first base, before Michaud threw behind the runner rounding second base for Hannah Irons to apply the out [Watch].

The Leopards -- who generated a 9-3 advantage in hits -- combined three with an error in the top of the 7th to make their move. The miscue tied things up at 1-1, before Igawa hooked a two-run single down the left field line.

Michaud received her third hit-by-pitch with two gone to bring the potential tying run to the dish, but the ensuing lineout closed the book.

The win for Schriver was number nine on the season, while MacDonald fanned three against the two earned runs in the tough setback.

The Nor'easters bounced right back up for GAME 2 (WIT 16-7) by plating four runs in the bottom of the 1st. Run-scoring doubles by Twarog and Whitten made it 2-0 [Watch / Watch], and Carsetti followed with a single. With the assistance of an error related to Caretti's hit, Whitten had enough momentum to score, and then Carsetti soon took the last 60 feet on a wild pitch.

Hannah Lappin doubled and scored in the 2nd to set the UNE cushion at 5-1, but then the Wentworth bats found their grove. Three runs in the 4th shifted the Leopards in front, 7-5, though a Whitten sacrifice fly got one right back for the hosts, converting a Michaud single. Three unearned runs opened things up in the 6th.

Roche went 4-for-5 with four RBI in the match, and Brianna Miller was 4-for-5 with four runs scored. Igawa and Trostel combined for six hits, five RBI, and six runs, and Kelsey Medalia had a pair of extra-base hits and drove in a couple of runs. Maddy Longoria went 6.2 innings in relief to collect the pitching result for WIT.

Twarog was the lone player with multiple hits for the Nor'easters. Additional singles came from Casey, Elise Connor, and Kyleigh Matola, while Tess Bolduc belted a leadoff homer to straightaway center in the 6th [Watch]. Mo Kinsella was on the wrong side of the decision, working three innings in relief from the circle.

Bolduc's home run was UNE's 18th of the campaign, matching the most in program records with the 2011 season. Michaud's .402 batting average was the highest by a Nor'easter since 2021, and her on-base percentage of .488 was the best since 2019. Irons drew 23 walks in 2026, which is good for a share of third-most over the last 31 years.
