Highlights

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's lacrosse team turned in a season-best defensive effort on Wednesday night, earning a 9-3 Conference of New England victory over Wentworth at Blue Bolt Field.

The Nor'easters (6-5, 4-2) – winners of five of the last six – raced a commanding 5-1 lead by the end of the first quarter, and later allowed just one second-half goal while closing out the defensive-minded victory.

Chloe Ryan matched her career high with four goals. Those alone would have been enough for UNE to come away victorious, but UNE also received a pair of goals from Sydney Balotin, plus additional tallies from Halle Huizenga, Vail Carruthers and Molly Henderson. Balotin diversified her stat line with three draw controls, three caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Wentworth (4-8, 1-6), which was on the wrong end of a 22-10 margin in shots on goal, featured three different scorers and received 13 saves from Lily Cohen, who allowed just two goals in the second half. Olivia Ferraro made seven saves for UNE, and blanked the Leopards in the third quarter.

The Nor'easters led 3-0 before Wentworth netted its first of the evening, and after two UNE goals in the final 1:07 of the opening quarter, the hosts took a commanding four-goal lead into the second quarter. The Leopards cashed in a player-up opportunity at the 14:38 mark of the second, but did not score again until there was 12:07 left in the fourth. UNE's advantage was never larger than the final margin of six.

UNE is back home on Saturday, April 11 to host Hartford at noon.
