BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England held a late one-goal lead, but a game-tying tally from Katie Graham with just seven seconds remaining in regulation – followed by the game-winner from Brenna Slattery – less than a minute into the overtime period sealed a 12-11 Conference of New England women's lacrosse victory for the University of Hartford on Saturday afternoon at Blue Bolt Field.
UNE's 2-0 first-quarter lead wound up being the largest for either side in Saturday's back-and-forth affair. Consecutive goals from
Molly Henderson and
Ava Ramino late in the fourth quarter had the Nor'easters (6-6, 4-3) primed to pick up a key CNE win, but a last-minute yellow card gave way to a crucial player-up opportunity for the Hawks (8-5, 5-2), who twice cashed in the non-releasable chance.
Laurel McIntosh and Sara Costa led the way for Hartford with three goals apiece. Lauren Samela added two goals, along with a game-high seven draw controls.
Chloe Ryan's three goals paced the Nor'easters, in addition to two from both
Molly Henderson and
Ella Cloutier.
Olivia Ferraro and Mandi Rivard both finished with seven saves, including some crucial stops in a game that saw the two sides combine for 19 free-position shots. UNE was 3-for-9 in those opportunities, and Hartford was 6-for-10.
In a true stalemate throughout the entirety of regulation, the score was tied at the end of each quarter. The second half alone saw six different ties. The Nor'easters' 9-8 early fourth-quarter lead was wiped away by back-to-back Hartford tallies, but UNE responded with a two-goal swing of its own. Following a yellow card that was given to UNE 1:13 left, Hartford sent a free-position shot wide, but made good on perhaps its last chance of the game when Courtney Ingham found Katie Graham for a high-percentage look.
With that penalty still being served in the overtime period, the Hawks won the draw and quickly scored on the only possession of the bonus period.
UNE will visit Curry on Tuesday, April 14 at 6:30 p.m.
