STANDISH, Maine -- Rookie infielder Zofia Twarog racked up five hits and four runs batted in to help guide the University of New England past Saint Joseph's College of Maine in a non-conference softball doubleheader, 8-0 and 7-5, on Monday (Apr. 6) at Richard Bailey Field.

Twarog was one of five players to hit safely in each contest for the Nor'easters (9-8), who head to Endicott College on Tuesday for the second half of a Conference of New England twinbill that started last week. Hannah Irons connected for three hits on the afternoon, while Emma Michaud, Delaney Whitten, and Adrianna Carsetti had one in each outing. Michaud also notched four RBI.

Kara MacDonald and Bridget Divoll combined for the shutout in the opener, and Mo Kinsella and Liv Arvidson pitched UNE through the victory in the nightcap.

Michaud gave the visitors the only lead they needed in the top of the 3rd inning of GAME 1 (UNE 8-0), with a two-out double to knock in Emma Koenig. Meanwhile, MacDonald retired all nine batters she faced through three frames.

It was still just 1-0 entering the 5th, though, before Lizzie Brytowski doubled and scored on a Koenig single, and Koenig later came home on a sacrifice fly by Michaud for a 3-0 cushion. Koenig finished with two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored, and supplied one of three more runs in the UNE 6th.

Twarog singled and scored on Koenig's hit in the 6th, and then matched the senior catcher's overall stat line in the 7th, following up a double by Carsetti with a blast over the left field wall. Twarog and Carsetti now share the team lead with two homers so far this year.

Divoll collected the win in the circle, yielding two hits and one free pass.

An early edge on a two-out RBI-single by Hannah Lappin -- cashing in a single by Tess Bolduc -- did not hold up for the Nor'easters in GAME 2 (UNE 7-5), as the Monks tallied two in the bottom of the 4th. However, three doubles by Irons, Carsetti, and Whitten, and then an RBI-single by Twarog, quickly fixed the deficit into a 4-2 margin in the 5th.

Michaud opened things up a bit in the 6th with a two-run single. Lappin, Irons, and Twarog all singled in the stanza, as well, with Twarog driving in another run with her third hit of the contest to make it 7-2.

SJC (10-16) began its half of the 6th with a double by Bella Napolitano-Aberle and triple by Makayla Quintal to get the first of two runs back. The Monks then kept UNE off the board in the 7th, despite the bases being loaded, and an RBI-single from Napolitano-Aberle brought the potential tying run to the dish, but the hosts could not extend it further.

Twarog's three hits marked a season-high, and Kyleigh Matola joined Irons and Lappin with a pair of hits. Kinsella went four innings in the circle to record the win, and Arvidson came through with the save.
