BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England men's tennis team earned its first Conference of New England victory, 6-1, over the University of Hartford on Sunday afternoon in the Nor'easters' inaugural match at Blue Cyclone Complex.
The doubles point narrowly sided with UNE (2-3, 1-2) after
Franco Leehive and
Liam Miller clinched with a tiebreak victory on the top court (7-6 [7-5]).
Logan Flor and Dawson Turcotte had already put the finishing touches on a 6-4 triumph at #3 doubles.
The four from UNE who contributed to doubles victories went on to represent all but one of the Nor'easters' singles wins. Turcotte delivered the clincher at #4 singles over Eli Benoit (6-1, 7-6 [7-1]) before lengthy matches involving Miller (#2) and Flor (#5) both yielded UNE victories to seal the final 6-1 tally.
Drake Turcotte set the tone in singles, topping Hartford's Jake Short (6-3, 6-2) at the #1 position in the first match to finish. A win from Thomas Andersen at #6 singles soon followed, representing the lone point for the Hawks (1-9, 1-4). Leehive then emerged victorious after a tiebreaker at #3 singles (6-1, 7-6 [8-6]), giving UNE a 3-1 advantage to set up Dawson Turcotte for the clinching point.
The Nor'easters are back in action at Blue Cyclone Complex on Tuesday, March 31, hosting Suffolk at 3 p.m.
