SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The University of New England women's lacrosse team turned in an all-around effort, including eight saves from
Olivia Ferraro and two goals from both
Ava Ramino and
Molly Henderson, to pick up a 6-5 Conference of New England victory on the road over Western New England University on Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium.
The Nor'easters (4-4, 2-1), now with three straight wins to their credit, did not allow a goal until the 13:33 mark of the second quarter, and nearly blanked WNEU (5-5, 1-2) in the fourth quarter as well, eventually surrendering a goal with under a minute remaining. Six of Ferraro's eight saves came in the second half.
Ramino's goal with 4:21 left in the third quarter handed UNE a 5-4 lead, and Henderson's early fourth-quarter tally gave the Nor'easters their first two-goal advantage since the second quarter. Despite the game featuring three different ties, UNE never trailed on Saturday.
During the first half, it was also consecutive goals from Ramino and Henderson that allowed the Nor'easters to take a two-goal lead – 4-2 in the final minutes before halftime.
Ella Cloutier and
Sydney Balotin contributed UNE's first two goals of the game, which were both quickly answered by the Golden Bears.
Balotin also recorded a game-high four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Julia Baldwin picked up a game-best five ground balls for the Nor'easters. WNEU, having committed 25 turnovers, were good on just 19 of its 29 clearing attempts. UNE was 20-for-25.
The Nor'easters return home for the first time in nearly three weeks on Tuesday, March 31, hosting Suffolk at 4 p.m.
