PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Meeting for the third time in nine days, Johnson & Wales University picked up a 4-2 Conference of New England (CNE) win versus the University of New England women's ice hockey squad at Lynch Arena on Saturday (Feb. 7).
The Wildcats scored the only goal of the 1st period and maintained that lead throughout, improving to 10-10-1 overall and 7-7-1 in league action. Now with 22 points, JWU holds the third spot in the standings over the Nor'easters 9-12-1, 5-9-1 CNE / 20 points) heading into the last two weeks before the postseason.
Teagan Garfield opened the scoring for the hosts, and a power-play goal from Allyson Barry made it 2-0 midway through the 2nd frame.
Keely Kasputis countered with a shorthanded tally for UNE, but with 18.9 seconds left in the stanza, Ava Morgan restored the two-goal cushion for Johnson & Wales.
A quick strike just 17 ticks into the 3rd by Kailin Kane increased the gap to 4-1. The Nor'easters cut into the margin five minutes later on a goal by
Adria Tebo, and out-shot JWU by a 16-10 spread in the period. But despite skating with a numerical advantage for 6:40 out of the final eight minutes, including 68 seconds of 5-on-3 at one point, the visitors could not get any closer.
Katelyn Cardoso had 24 saves for the Wildcats. UNE's
Kyleigh Matola and
Danielle DeJon split time in net, accumulating 16 and 14 stops, respectively.
For the second straight day,
Madeline Hill supplied a team-high three blocked shots for the Nor'easters, who visit Suffolk University (18 points) on Friday.
