Nor'easters roll to key 5-0 shutout of Suffolk

Statistics

EAST BOSTON, Mass. -- Adria Tebo scored two goals in the first period to initiate a powerful University of New England offensive attack, as the Nor'easters skated to a 5-0 win over Suffolk University in a Conference of New England women's ice hockey contest played Friday evening (Feb. 13) at Porrazzo Rink.

Tebo's pair of goals came during a span of 2:07 midway through the opening period. The first occurred when Tebo came away with the puck on a failed Suffolk clearing effort. Her initial shot was saved, but she followed and poked home the puck to give UNE a 1-0 lead at 8:39 of the frame. Kaylen Taddia and Madeline Hill assisted on the goal. The second tally came when Hannah Humes slid the puck from the right circle toward the cage. Suffolk's goaltender got a pad on it, and Tebo knocked it in from the left doorstep. Jamie DuPont was credited with a secondary assist on the power-play goal.

The Nor'easters added to their lead early in the second period. Danielle McCarthy intercepted a Ram effort to clear the zone and sniped a wrist shot that clanged off the left pipe. Averi Curran cleaned up the rebound to make the score 3-0.

UNE continued to pour it on, pushing the score to 4-0 at 15:43 of the second. Taddia blocked a shot attempt by the Rams, deflecting the puck the length of the ice. Ram goaltender Katelyn Michals came out of the crease aggressively to try and play the puck but directed it to DuPont, who converted a shot from the mid-slot as she was knocked to the ice by a Suffolk defender. Taddia was credited with her second assist of the evening on the play and now has a team-leading 11 helpers.

The Nor'easters (10-12-1, 6-9-1 CNE) tacked on one more goal at 5:39 of the closing period when Lainie Lemieux converted a shot from the right circle, with Amanda Forziati and Emily LeBrun assisting.

Rookie goaltender Kyleigh Matola earned her third shutout with a 22-save performance, which included denying a short-handed breakaway bid by Bella Schmidt midway through the first period.

Michals played the opening 35:43 in goal and stopped 20 shots before giving way to Lucy Cantin, who had 21 saves for the Rams (5-15-2, 5-8-2).

The victory was UNE's largest margin of victory this season and completed a three-game season sweep of Suffolk (12-0 goal differential), while improving its position to host a playoff game during the upcoming CNE Tournament. The Nor'easters will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday (Feb. 14) when they host Endicott College at 4 p.m.
