BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The No.7 University of New England men's ice hockey team received six goals from six different players and 19 saves out of
Harrison Chesney to cruise past Wentworth Institute of Technology, 6-0, in a Conference of New England (CNE) match at the Harold Alfond Forum on Friday night (Feb. 13).
The current eight-game winning streak is the fourth-longest in program history for the Nor'easters (18-5-0, 15-3-0 CNE), who now have two games left and are five points clear of Endicott College (3 left) in the league standings and six in front of Suffolk University (3 left).
It was the ninth time that UNE scored at least six goals this year, and the fourth shutout for Chesney, which is now tied for the Division III lead in the category.
Dominic Murphy tallied a team-high three points (all assists) to move into a share of second nationally at 1.18 assists per game.
The sides played more the eight minutes of action before the first whistle, and it wasn't too much longer before Murphy set up the opening score at the 12:12 mark on a one-timer by
Seth Murch into the top-right corner
[Watch]. Another defenseman gave the hosts to a 2-0 lead, as
Noah Szretter found the five-hole in transition 57 seconds later
[Watch].
Drew Olivieri delivered his team-leading 13th goal just 12 seconds into the 2nd period
[Watch], and the Nor'easters had the territorial edge for the initial part of the frame, but that flipped the other way for the last nine minutes. UNE needed to kill off three penalties down the stretch of the 2nd, including 46 seconds of 5-on-3, before another 46 to fully clear the box. Chesney recorded all 10 of his saves during the latter portion of the stanza to keep the visitors off of the board.

In the 3rd,
Nick Marino registered a shorthanded goal off a feed from
Jayden Price by swinging a backhand at a bouncing puck and finding the top-left corner with 7:23 remaining
[Watch]. UNE's second power-play opportunity soon followed, and it took the hosts only nine ticks to convert, as Murphy connected with
Juraj Elias for a low wrister from the right dot
[Watch]. Seven of the 10 goals by Elias have come on the advantage this season; seven was tied for second in D3 at the start of the day.
Brayden Cook added the final score
[Watch] to wind up with two points on the evening, which was the same as Olivieri and
Chip Hamlett (2 assists), who led all skaters with three blocked shots.
With four successful penalty kills, the defensive special teams unit for the Nor'easters improved to 82-for-83 (98.8%). The next best group in the country is operating at a 91.2 percent clip.
Jack McGovern collected 29 saves for the Leopards (5-15-2, 4-12-1), who will entertain UNE on Saturday afternoon.
