BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England football team was in a two-possession game with No. 15 Endicott College early in the fourth quarter of Saturday's Conference of New England clash, but ultimately could not contain the Gulls' offense as Endicott comfortably closed out a 55-27 victory at Blue Storm Stadium.
Â
Shea Lynch passed for 369 yards, while Bryan Ferreira ran for 203 as the Gulls (5-0, 2-0) amassed 692 total yards of offense. Endicott came away with points on all but four possessions, which included a fourth-quarter pick-six from UNE's
CJ Cooper.
Â
Gavin Martin played the majority of the game at quarterback for the Nor'easters (0-5, 0-2) and put together a solid effort, with 171 yards on 13-of-21 passing, along with 15 carries for 56 yards. Each of UNE's three running backs (
Damien Jones,
Nathan Delgado and
Javin Willis) averaged better than five yards per carry, and Jones delivered a big play in the third quarter, catching a pass over the middle from Martin and taking it 73 yards for a score. The Nor'easters went for it on fourth down seven times and were good on just three of those tries, and threw a costly red-zone interception early in the third quarter.
Â
Endicott had a 17-0 lead before UNE was on the board with a 26-yard run by
Damien Jones. After trailing 20-7 at halftime, UNE found itself in a 41-14 hole early in the fourth, but swung momentum with a rushing touchdown from Willis, followed by Cooper's defensive score that made it a 41-27 game. Endicott shut the door on the ensuing possession with a five-play, 75-yard touchdown drive.
Â
Will Tirrell paced the Gulls defensively with a game-high 14 total tackles. Caleb Luz had 13 tackles, including two sacks.
Jeremy Franzini and
Spencer LaBrecque racked up 11 tackles apiece for UNE.
Â
The Nor'easters bye week is now upon them, but UNE will be back home the following week (Saturday, Oct. 17) to host Maine Maritime for a noon kickoff on homecoming.
