Power play fuels UNE's 5-1 triumph over Lancers

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's ice hockey team deposited four power-play goals during a stretch of 12 minutes spanning the first intermission, and received 13 third-period saves from Danielle DeJon, to skate away with a 5-1 victory against Worcester State University at the Harold Alfond Forum on Thursday night (Jan. 8).

Winners of four in-a-row, the Nor'easters (7-6-0) cashed in on their first 5-on-4 chance with 7:00 left in the opening frame, as a shot by Hannah Humes bounced in off of Amanda Forziati. While the Lancers (6-7-0) leveled things a few minutes later from the stick of Emily Johns, UNE was soon on another power-play and Madeline Hill settled a loose puck in front and stuffed it under the bar for a 2-1 edge with 46 seconds left in the period.

The Nor'easters started the 2nd with essentially a full five minutes of power-play time and put two more on the board to pad the cushion to 4-1. First, it was Jamie Ryan sneaking a wrist shot through from the point for her first goal of the year, and then Forziati centered a backhand from the wall that trickled through a screen inside the near post. The four advantaged scores in the contest stand alone as the second-highest in program history.

UNE's special teams came through on the other end to maintain the lead, as a pair of 2nd-period penalties were cleared without allowing a shot on target. The Nor'easters killed off another in the latter stages on the 3rd, which overlapped with nearly four minutes of Worcester State pulling the goalie for a sixth attacker. DeJon stood tall with eight stops during the sequence.

Lancers defender Fiona Hatton managed to block two UNE chances at the empty net, but could not deny the third try, as Lainie Lemieux scored for the Nor'easters with 1:24 to go. The goal marked a season-high for the hosts.

Lemieux added two assists for three total points. Kaylen Taddia matched that with three helpers, which hadn't been recorded by a UNE player since 2019-20. Humes and Ryan joined Forziati with two points, and Jamie DuPont chipped in with one assist and went 11-of-16 on faceoffs.

DeJon ended with 22 saves to backstop her first win of the season, and Keely Kasputis supported with three blocked shots.

Maverick Margraf turned away 28 shots for the visitors.

With the non-conference slate now complete, the Nor'easters resume their Conference of New England schedule on Saturday (4 p.m.) at home versus Nichols College.
