Bison finish strong to clip UNE, 3-1

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Nichols College netted three 3rd-period goals to overtake the University of New England and pick up a 3-1 Conference of New England (CNE) women's ice hockey result on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 10) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Bison (4-10-0, 1-8-0 CNE) did all of their scoring in a span of seven minutes, beginning at the 4:48 mark when Riley Devlin finished into an empty net on the right side. The initial shot had UNE goalie Kyleigh Matola sliding to her right and the puck bounced at the left post back out behind and through the crease.

Kaylyn Bourque delivered the go-ahead tally a few minutes later with an individual effort up the left wall, tapping it to herself around two different defenders before a shot from the left dot. Then, with 8:10 to go, Keira Goffe carried one-on-one through the neutral zone and held off the defender on her left shoulder to curl in and slip the puck under the keeper.

Nichols benefited from nearly six minutes of power-play time in the last session to tilt the ice in its favor, after keeping UNE off of the board through six chances over the first 40 minutes.

Ivy Grant made her only three stops of the 3rd during the final two minutes of the contest as the Nor'easters looked to respond, bringing her game total to 26. Kerstin Ambruso had three of her five blocked shots in the frame to help the visiting cause.

UNE (7-7-0, 3-4-0) saw its win streak halted at four with the decision. The hosts did take the 1-0 lead with 3:17 left in the 2nd stanza on a goal by Keely Kasputis. Amanda Forziati caromed a puck off a defender in front and it fell right into the slot for Kasputis to tuck it off the inside of the right post [Watch]. Averi Curran also assisted on the play.

Matola had 19 saves for the Nor'easters, who tallied 18 blocked shots. Hannah Humes recorded five of those, while Forziati and Jenna Kirch notched three apiece.

UNE will now prepare for the upcoming weekend series with nationally-ranked Endicott College, which starts Friday (7 p.m.) at the Forum.
