UNE holds off Bates to earn five-set decision

Statistics

LEWISTON, Maine -- Leading 14-9 in the final set, the University of New England staved off a late charge by host Bates College to close out a 3-2 win (19-25, 25-17, 26-24, 20-25, 15-13) over the hosts in the final contest of a tri-match Saturday (Sept. 6) at Alumni Gymnasium.

After dropping two of the first three sets, the Bobcats forced a deciding frame by winning the fourth. Just one point from defeat (14-9) in the final set, Bates reeled off the next four points to close within one at 14-13. A kill by Ellijah Hanley sent UNE back to Biddeford victorious, while also notching the Nor'easters' second five-set win over the Bobcats in as many seasons. UNE overcame a 2-0 deficit to storm back and stun Bates last September.

Hanley finished with a match-high 20 kills, 12 digs and six services aces to help lead UNE, which evened its record at 3-3 with the triumph. Hannah Nowell contributed 17 points (15 kills, 2 service aces) and added 10 digs to post a double-double. Kailyn Reilly pitched in with 10 kills and seven total blocks. Hayley Shult led all players with 33 assists to fuel the UNE attack, while Kelsey Bradshaw had 15 digs.

Anais Reneaum registered 17 kills for Bates (2-1), and Ellie Asada served up six aces.

The Nor'easters, who had swept Keene State College earlier in the day, return to action Wednesday (Sept. 10) with a 6 p.m. road tilt at Wellesley College.
