BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's tennis team continued its strong start of its inaugural season with a 7-0 sweep of the University of Hartford in a Conference of New England (CNE) match played Saturday afternoon (Sep. 27) at Blue Cyclone Complex.
With back-to-back league victories, the Nor'easters are now 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the CNE. The Hawks -- back in action this year for the first time since 2016 -- are winless in five outings.
Madeline Frank and
Nora Hill dug themselves out of a 2-4 deficit at #1 doubles with four straight games, and the doubles point was secured two minutes later when
Alyssa Fritschka and
Sydney Pelletier polished off a 6-2 win at #3. For good measure,
Sofia Salcedo Ladaga and
Andie Lamontagne also booked a 6-2 result at #2.
Early progress in the singles matches were mixed, as Frank at #1 and Pelletier at #6 were both up 5-0 before a couple of UNE's lineup got on the board (0-3). Pelletier didn't concede a game to give the Nor'easters a second point, and Fritschka followed in similar fashion at #5 (6-0, 6-0) to make it 3-0. Frank sealed the team triumph with a 6-0, 6-1 decision.
Lamontagne wound up with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #4 singles, and Salcedo Ladaga rattled off 10 straight games during a 6-3, 6-4 outcome at #3. Hill took six of the last seven games to claim the opening set at #2, and then needed a 7-4 tiebreaker -- in which she never trailed -- to log a 6-4, 7-6 victory and complete the sweep for the hosts.
UNE is slated to entertain Suffolk University on Tuesday (3 p.m.).
