Statistics

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Shelly Tremblay scored for the second time with 9:10 gone in overtime to provide the University of New England field hockey team with a thrilling 4-3 Conference of New England (CNE) victory over Johnson & Wales University on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 27) at Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

The win gets the Nor'easters (5-5) on the board in league play, now at 1-2. In their first season of conference membership, the Wildcats fall to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the CNE.

UNE peppered the hosts in the extra session, with 14 shot attempts, and finally broke through for the deciding tally on its lone penalty corner of OT. Kate Kelso inserted it, Makena Valentine had the stick stop at the top of the circle, and Tremblay rammed it in for her second goal of the year.

The visitors faced a 2-0 deficit at intermission, and that spread almost made it through three quarters, but McKenzie Berry delivered her first goal of 2025 with just 18 seconds left in the frame to split the margin.

The Nor'easters amassed a 17-2 advantage in shots during the second half, and the chances started to wear down JWU, as Tremblay struck three minutes into the 4th period to pull even at 2-2. Valentine and Abby Stevens assisted on the play.

Then Stevens notched her first goal of the season at the 56.43 mark to shift UNE in front, but that only lasted 77 seconds, as Zofia Bangs found the back of the cage for the second time to tie things at 3-all with exactly two minutes to go in regulation.

The Nor'easters, who finished with a 39-10 cushion in shots (24-6 on goal) had only scored as many as two during the initial nine contests.

Savanna Harvey turned in three stops to backstop the positive result, while Sophia Brea collected 20 saves for the Wildcats.

After a scoreless quarter and a half, Bangs got Johnson & Wales going in the 24th minute. Emma Ferrara padded the edge in the 29th.

UNE is off for the next and will resume on October 4 at home against Nichols College.
