BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Shelly Tremblay opened the scoring after just 76 seconds and the University of New England quickly built a six-goal cushion on the way to a 7-1 Conference of New England (CNE) field hockey victory versus Nichols College at Blue Bolt Field on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 4).
It was 4-0 with less than nine minutes gone, and 6-0 in under 20, as the Nor'easters converted on half of their shot attempts to that point. The offensive explosion comes on the heels of the previous season-high in goals for UNE -- now 11 games into the year, more than half are from the last two outings (11 of 20).
The Nor'easters (6-5, 2-2 CNE) have now captured the last 20 meetings against the Bison (2-10, 0-4).
Gianna Korisianos set up UNE's first tally
[Watch], and the second, which was scored by
Micaela Jacobs in the 6th minute
[Watch]. Then
Emma Shuman got on the scoresheet with the help of
Ava Wolverton [Watch], and
Kate Kelso redirected a entry into the circle by
Chloe Michaud to blow things wide open
[Watch].
Early in the 2nd, Kelso navigated through the entire NC defense up the middle and found the back of the cage again -- a mere 13 ticks after the quarter restart
[Watch]. Korisianos then had the favor returned by Tremblay to get on the board in the 20th minute
[Watch].
Nichols drew its lone penalty corner in the 25th minute and made it count, as Merle Steinau slotted an outside drive into the net.
Tremblay capped the busy first half of action by feeding
Makena Valentine for her team-leading sixth goal of the campaign at the 29:35 mark
[Watch].
The goals by Jacobs, Shuman, and Kelso were their first of the year.
The Nor'easters had 12 shots and 10 corners during the final 30 minutes, but were kept in-check by the Bison, who received a total of three defensive saves from Steinau on the afternoon. Jessa Altermose had five stops in 51 minutes of relief work for the visitors.
Greta Jennison picked up the goalkeeping decision for UNE, which heads to Keene State College for a non-conference match on Tuesday.
