WELLESLEY, Mass. --
Riley Zielinski redirected a drive by
Shelly Tremblay with 2:36 left in the first overtime period to give the University of New England field hockey team a 2-1 victory over Wellesley College at Butler Stadium on Wednesday (Sep. 24).
Greta Jennison made half of her eight saves for the Nor'easters (4-5) in the extra frame, and visitors also navigated safely around two defensive penalty corners to stay alive. UNE was able to shift play in the other direction, leading to Zielinski's second career tally.
The hosts carried a 1-0 cushion into the 4th, but that's when
Gianna Korisianos struck for the equalizer in the 47th minute. It marked the second goal in the last three outings for Korisianos, who drove into the circle hammered one past the keeper.
Things were scoreless at the half, and then Wellesley found some early pressure in the 3rd quarter to result in a goal. The Blue statistically doubled up UNE in the stanza (6-3 shots, 3-1 corners), accumulating it all during a 33-second span that was capped by Madeline Hamstra marker off an insert by Annika Schermerhorn in the 33rd minute.
The positive goalkeeping decision was the second for Jennison. On the opposite side, Katelyn Hurt collected three saves for Wellesley.
The Nor'easters are slated for a Conference of New England (CNE) date at new member Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) on Saturday.
