GORHAM, Maine --
Makena Valentine netted a goal from a penalty corner situation and helped the defense only yield one shot on target as the University of New England clipped the University of Southern Maine by a 1-0 margin in the season-opener of the 2025 field hockey campaign on Friday (Aug. 29) at Hannaford Field.
The Nor'easters (1-0) have now blanked USM in each of the last three meetings, and are 11-3 all-time against the Huskies.
Savanna Harvey made the one save between the posts in her first start since pulling on a UNE jersey.
The visitors came out firing, with six shots on goal during the opening 15 minutes, but Eleanor Folsom denied each attempt for Southern Maine. Harvey's stop was early in the 2nd quarter, a few minutes before Valentine broke onto the scoreboard in the 24th minute. The senior defender now has 13 career goals.
After a fairly quiet 3rd stanza, both ways, Jaigon Boudreau kept the Huskies in contention was a defensive save. Shot attempts ended at 13-4 in favor of UNE, while corners totaled to an 8-1 spread.
One day off and then the Nor'easters will be back at it, welcoming Worcester Polytechnic Institute to Blue Bolt Field on Sunday (1 p.m.).
