BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Lauren Coutu cashed in on a loose ball in the crease during stoppage time in the 2nd quarter to lift Worcester Polytechnic Institute over the University of New England, 1-0, in field hockey action Sunday afternoon (Aug. 31) at Blue Bolt Field.

After a 1st period when the hosts had a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners, the Engineers (2-0) had the Nor'easters (1-1) pinned in the defensive zone late in the 2nd. WPI's first recordable action of the frame was a penalty corner with 2:41 left before halftime, and the ensuing shot needed a defensive save from UNE's Micaela Jacobs to keep things scoreless for the moment. However, that corner was the first of six for the visitors in the stanza -- two of which coming after the clock hit 0:00 -- and ultimately a bouncing ball at the right post squirted into the middle for Coutu to give her side the lead.

WPI held UNE without a shot attempt for the final 24 minutes of the contest, as shots on goal (6-1) and corners (8-0) favored the Engineers in the second half.

Savanna Harvey notched 10 saves between the pipes for the Nor'easters, while Myles Lakin turned in a pair of stops to secure the shutout for WPI.

UNE is back at it on Wednesday with a trip up the coast for a date against No.24 Bowdoin College.
