EAST BOSTON, Mass. – The University of New England women's lacrosse team never trailed on its way to a 14-8 Conference of New England women's lacrosse victory over Suffolk on Wednesday night at James A. Sartori Stadium.
The Nor'easters (5-6-1, 3-1-1 CNE) clung to a two-goal advantage before scoring six of the game's last eight goals, including back-to-back
Molly Henderson tallies that helped UNE pull away.
Henderson,
Vail Carruthers,
Sydney Balotin and
Morgan White each scored two goals to pace the UNE offense while
Jenna Trafford made seven saves. Suffolk (6-7, 2-3 CNE) was led by Ally Colburn's game-high four goals.
In addition to her two goals, Balotin gathered a game-best seven draw controls, along with two groundballs and a caused turnover. White added an assist, plus five draw controls, where UNE claimed a 17-9 edge.
The Nor'easters jumped on top, 2-0, with
Barrie Guertin and
Izzy Broschk opening the scoring before the Rams answered, tying the game by the end of the first quarter. UNE outscored Suffolk, 5-2, in the second to take a 7-4 lead into halftime. Carruthers' two goals came consecutively just over two minutes apart late in the second quarter.
Two Suffolk goals separated by less than two minutes early in the third quarter cut UNE's lead to 8-6, but a 6-1 run, including Henderson's consecutive scores, had the visitors doubling up the Rams, 14-7. Colburn scored her fourth goal, the last of the game, for Suffolk with only 27 seconds left.
The Nor'easters will visit Hartford on Saturday, April 12 at noon before returning home on Tuesday, April 15 to welcome Gordon.
