WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Hartford took control in the third quarter of Saturday afternoon's Conference of New England tilt at Al-Marzook Field to come away with a 15-10 women's lacrosse victory over the University of New England.
Part of a 5-1 run in the second half, the Hawks (8-5, 4-2 CNE) scored four straight goals in less than three minutes between the end of the third quarter and the opening minute of the fourth to grab a commanding 13-7 lead in a game that had a back-and-forth start.
Hartford's Meghan Smith narrowly outdid UNE's
Morgan White for the game high in goals with six, including two during the Hawks' late 4-0 run. White finished with five – two shy of matching her career high. Lauren Samela and Madison Olmstead added three goals apiece for Hartford, while White was the only UNE player with multiple goals. Smith also recorded 10 draw controls and six groundballs, both of which were good for game highs.
Both sides traded goals before Hartford netted two straight to take a 4-2 lead early in the second quarter. UNE (5-7-1, 3-2-1 CNE) responded with two of its own, including White's second of the game, to draw even. Consecutive Smith goals, and another by Samela, handed the Nor'easters a 7-4 deficit before
Vail Carruthers netted the final tally of the first half to help the visitors cut the deficit to two before the break.
Hartford outscored UNE 5-2 in the third quarter, and despite White's three second-half goals, created an insurmountable lead with an explosive end of the third that included three goals in the final two minutes.
The Nor'easters are back home at Blue Bolt Field to host Gordon on Tuesday, April 15 at 4 p.m.
