BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin College bounced back from a two-run deficit in the nightcap to complete a sweep of the University of New England, 9-0 (5 innings) and 7-3, in softball action Tuesday (Apr. 29) at Pickard Field.

Anika Ewert tallied six hits to pace the Polar Bears (17-17), while Kyla Gary and Chloe Garcia contributed three hits apiece. Maddie Current pitched the shutout in the opener.

Three Nor'easters had hits in both matches -- Elise Connor (3 total), Fiona Casey, and Abby Walsh. UNE (10-26) returns home for another non-conference twinbill against Plymouth State University on Thursday (3 p.m.).

The visitors had two leads in GAME 2 (BOW 7-3), at 1-0 in the 1st inning and 3-1 in the 3rd. A fielder's choice RBI by Connor scored Hannah Irons in the initial frame, and the pair produced again two innings later on the first of two hits by Connor. Emma Michaud, who notched her second hit in the stanza to follow the leadoff walk by Irons, then scored on a double-steal to make the edge two.

UNE left the bases loaded with one out in that 3rd, though, and Bowdoin cut into the margin (3-2) with the second RBI from Maddie Paschke in the bottom of the session. Then, with two gone and the bases full in the 4th, the Polar Bears received singles from Ewert and Gary to move in front, 5-3.

The hosts, who added two runs in the 5th, got a combined 4.2 innings of clean relief from Ava Biascotti and Kathleen Hester. Penelope Fong-Picariello and Liv Barrett each supported with two hits and scored for Bowdoin.

Cat Higgins went four innings in the circle for UNE. Michaud's two-hit outing was her team-leading 10th of the season.

The Polar Bears raced out of the gate in GAME 1 (BOW 9-0), plating four, two, and three over the first three innings. A two-run triple from Garcia helped get things started in the 1st, and then a two-run double by Garcia set the gap at nine in the 3rd. Ewert scored on both plays, as well as on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the 2nd.

Current escaped the UNE 4th without the Nor'easters breaking onto the scoreboard, as two-out hits by Jadyn Kimball, Casey, and Walsh were stranded by a popout. Current totaled four strikeouts against no walks in the run-rule win.

Connor and Grace Riva had two other hits for UNE. Mo Kinsella pitched two innings in the setback.
