BIDDEFORD, Maine – Salem State held a 5-4 lead early in the third quarter before
Morgan White went on to score four of her game-high five goals during the second half, helping the University of New England pull away for a 13-7 women's lacrosse result in Wednesday's non-conference affair on Blue Bolt Field.
The Nor'easters (1-2) silenced the game's back-and-forth nature once the Vikings (2-1) grabbed their early third-quarter lead, scoring four straight to take an 8-5 lead into the fourth. White's final two goals came back-to-back in response to an early-fourth quarter Viking tally as UNE continued to build its cushion.
In addition to her five goals, White matched
Barrie Guertin for the team lead in the assist column with two.
Emma Collingwood was another offensive standout for UNE, having finished with three goals. Laura Young, Jordan Turcotte and Megan Parthum each scored a pair for the Vikings, while Nora Bradley made 10 saves.
White's first goal of the game (
Watch), along with a
Meagan Donovan goal (
Watch), both came within the first five minutes of the opening quarter to hand the Nor'easters a quick 2-0 lead. Salem State answered with a 3-0 run before
Chloe Ryan tied the game, 3-3, in the final minutes of the first (
Watch).
One goal apiece was scored in a second-quarter stalemate before UNE began to create separation in the third, all following Young's go-ahead goal for the Vikings less than two minutes into the quarter. Consecutive White goals allowed UNE to regain the lead before
Sydney Balotin (
Watch) and
Paige DeVries (
Watch) scored to deliver a three-goal lead, 8-5.
The Vikings mustered a response early in the fourth, but another spurt of back-to-back White goals followed, again kicking off a 4-0 UNE run, helped the Nor'easters seal the victory.
UNE is in action on Blue Bolt Field once again on Saturday, March 8 to host Plymouth State at noon.
