BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of Southern Maine took both ends of a doubleheader from the University of New England with scores of 10-2 and 5-0 in Wednesday's non-conference softball action on Nor'easter Diamond.
Maddy Paradis, Olivia Levasseur and Kendall Migliorini each recorded three hits across the two games to pace a Husky offense that found top-to-bottom production. Levasseur came away with a team-high total of three RBIs on the day. Lexus McIntosh and Madi Coots both went the distance in the circle, and Coots did so in shutout fashion while striking out eight Nor'easters in the nightcap.
Hannah Irons, one of two from UNE (3-9) with a hit in both games, collected the only two RBIs of the day for the Nor'easters with her two-run double in the third inning of Game 1.
Gwen Christie helped USM jump on top, 2-0, in the second inning of
GAME 1 (USM 10-2), driving a two-run double to left-center. The Nor'easters answered in the third when Irons' two-bagger scored
Hannah Lappin and
Grace Riva.
A four-run fourth for the Huskies kicked off a stretch of eight unanswered USM runs, all while McIntosh limited UNE to just one hit over the last four innings. Ella Bezanson, Kendall Migliorini and Alana Delisle each recorded two hits for the Huskies during the opener.
The Huskies hung two on the board in the first inning of
GAME 2 (USM 5-0) before UNE starter
Cat Higgins settled in to record four straight scoreless frames. The Huskies broke through once again, though, with a three-run sixth that included RBI doubles from Migliorini and Hannah Garcia.
The Nor'easters, who scattered three hits, had their best chance to get in the board in the in the fourth with a runner on third and one out – a threat that ended as the Huskies escaped by turning a hard line drive into a double play.
Paradis and Levasseur were both 2-for-4 at the plate for USM to support Coots, who recovered from a leadoff walk in the seventh with three straight strikeouts to secure the victory.
UNE is back in action on Friday, March 28 to open Conference of New England play at home against Endicott. The opening game of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m. Friday's contests were originally scheduled for Sunday, but moved up due to weather.
