Colonels edge UNE, 2-1

Statistics

CANTON, Mass. -- Curry College received goals from Danielle Reid and Bella Mardesich to get past the University of New England, 2-1, in Conference of New England (CNE) women's ice hockey action Friday evening (Feb. 7) at Canton Ice House.

With the result, the Colonels (7-12-1, 6-8-0 CNE) close the gap to two points on the second-place Nor'easters (9-10-1, 7-6-1), who have 22 points with four conference matches left on the schedule. All the way back in November, the teams split a weekend series of one-goal games.

An unassisted score by Reid with 8:27 elapsed in the 1st period, while shorthanded, put the home squad in front. UNE got even in the middle of the 2nd, though, on a play started by Emily LeBrun in the defensive zone. LeBrun lifted a stick near the blue line and shielded the puck for Kaylen Taddia to collect it and feed it up ahead for Anna O'Neill. O'Neill beat the two closest Curry players the rest of the way and finished by tucking a shot into the upper left corner of the cage for her second goal of the season.

But with 2:42 left in the 2nd, Mardesich pocketed a cross-ice pass from Grayson Goolgasian to restore the Colonels' advantage.

Neither side could convert on a pair of power play opportunities over the final 22 minutes, and Sarah Kerr made six of her 12 saves in the last stanza to seal the decision for Curry.

Kirsten DiCicco had 28 saves in the setback for the Nor'easters, and Eliana Kane registered three blocked shots in support.

UNE returns home on Saturday to entertain first-year program Keene State College in a non-league contest at 2 p.m.
