Curry stays perfect in CNE with 47-30 win over UNE

Statistics

MILTON, Mass. – 31 unanswered points by Curry College allowed the Colonels to overcome a 30-16 third-quarter deficit and remain unbeaten in the Conference of New England with a 47-30 win over the University of New England football team on Saturday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field.

In a battle of 7-1 teams, Damien Jones' three first-half touchdowns helped the Nor'easters (7-2, 4-2) take a 23-16 lead into halftime before Curry (8-1, 6-0) erupted for 31 points, including 24 in the fourth quarter, to seal the win.

Jones finished the game with 267 rushing yards and four touchdowns – both career highs – and eclipsed 1,000 yards on the season, becoming the first player in program history to reach that milestone in a single season. His first half on Saturday included a 78-yard touchdown run that helped UNE battle back from an early 16-6 deficit.

Montie Quinn, the nation's leading rusher, went for 282 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with 9:36 remaining in the fourth. Curry quarterback Anthony Santino threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another.

Berto Zepeda was Chris Lang's top target, hauling in five receptions while going over 100 yards (101) for the third time this season. Lang was 13-of-31 through the air with 151 yards and a pick.

UNE's second offensive snap of the game, following Curry's three-and-out, was a 47-yard touchdown from Jones. Curry answered on the next drive, and with a missed PAT from both sides, the score was even at 6-6. Quinn's first touchdown of the day, followed by a 36-yard Curry field goal, had the Nor'easters in a 16-6 hole early in the second quarter before two Jones scores, including the 78-yard run, and a 24-yard field goal from Anthony Lacaprucia, gave UNE a seven-point advantage (23-16) by the end of the first half.

Jones found the endzone again on the Nor'easters' opening drive of the second half, set up by Lang's 41-yard pass to Zepeda, to extend the lead to 30-16. From that point on, four of Curry's five remaining possessions yielded a touchdown.

UNE concludes its regular season on Saturday, Nov. 15, hosting New England College at noon.
