BRUNSWICK, Maine -- A pair of 2nd-period goals, combined with 30 saves from
Kyleigh Matola, were enough for the University of New England to secure a 2-1 women's ice hockey victory over Bowdoin College on Tuesday night (Nov. 25) at Watson Arena.
The Nor'easters (3-5-0) now own two wins out of 10 all-time meetings between the programs -- both away from home. The Polar Bears (3-2-0) were the first team listed in the receiving votes section of the latest USCHO.com Top 15 Poll at the start of the day.
An early power play in the middle stanza led to UNE grabbing the lead at the 2:01 mark.
Amanda Forziati collected a rebound behind the cage and slipped it right out in front for
Averi Curran to stuff past Bowdoin netminder Ericah Folden

Jenna Kirch also tallied an assist on the play.
The visitors struck again 4:47 later, just 10 seconds after killing off a Polar Bear power play and dumping it the length of the ice.
Danielle McCarthy held the zone on the clearing attempt off of the right wall and crossed it to
Jamie DuPont, who whipped a shot from the left dot inside the near post before Folden could slide over.

That 2-0 spread held for almost 25 minutes, until Bowdoin converted on its second advantage of the 3rd frame with a tally by Bella Mele at the 11:35 mark. Moments later, Matola made one of her biggest stops to maintain the scoreboard edge, as Abigail Ainley got behind the defense for a point-blank try but was stoned down low

The hosts then used another power play opportunity -- their sixth -- as a chance to add even more pressure by pulling the goalie for a 6-on-4 with 3:31 remaining. However, Forziati and
Lainie Lemieux came up with blocked shots while two skaters short, and the Polar Bears could not put a shot on target the rest of the way, until Matola flashed the leather on a high wrister with 20 seconds left on the clock

Folden ended with 15 saves for Bowdoin, which took a second straight setback.
Matola has backstopped each of the three wins for UNE, which is off until next Tuesday (7 p.m.) when No.13 Colby College visits the Harold Alfond Forum.
