Adria Tebo netted an unassisted goal in the early portion of the 3rd period to give the University of New England women's ice hockey team the edge in a 2-1 triumph over the University of Southern Maine on Friday (Oct. 31) at USM Ice Arena.
The Nor'easters (1-0) blocked six shots over the final 14 minutes to help seal the result, including one by Tebo in the waning seconds.
Kyleigh Matola registered five of her 12 saves down the stretch to backstop the win in her first collegiate action.
After a scoreless opening period, when UNE had a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal, the Huskies (0-1) got on the board first at the 7:19 mark of the 2nd frame. Sydnee Chaisson scored for the hosts, with assists to Caroline Thompson and Jillian Jackson.
That cushion lasted all of three minutes, though, as
Lainie Lemieux found the back of the net just past the midway point of the contest.
Keely Kasputis -- back in the lineup after only seeing three games last season -- and
Amanda Forziati helped on the play for the visitors.
Danielle DeJon logged the initial 30 minutes between the pipes on the Nor'easter end, totaling 10 saves.
Hannah Humes supported the defensive effort with a team-best three blocked shots.
Maggie Jones posted 28 stops for Southern Maine.
UNE travels to the University of Massachusetts-Boston on Saturday.
