SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --
Zoe Lambke and
Sydney Pelletier captured third sets in their respective singles matches to seal a 5-2 victory for the University of New England against Western New England University in a Conference of New England (CNE) contest on Saturday (Oct. 18) at the Forest Park Tennis Courts.
With the triumph, the Nor'easters (11-3, 5-3 CNE) lock up one of the six lines on the CNE Championship bracket. In year one of its inaugural women's tennis campaign, UNE has two outings left in the regular season before the tournament begins in 10 days.
After the Golden Bears (3-8, 3-6) turned a 3-0 deficit into a 3-2 margin with decisions at #4 and #1 singles, Lambke polished off a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win at #6 to clinch it for the visitors. Pelletier was well on her way to get the win UNE needed, anyway, rallying from a dropped opening set in a tiebreak for the victory (6-7 [2-7], 6-0, 6-3).
The Nor'easters did enough at the top to get on the board first, receiving a 6-2 triumph from
Madeline Frank and
Nora Hill at #1 doubles and then a 6-4 outcome from
Andie Lamontagne and
Sofia Salcedo Ladaga at #2 -- while #3 was in a losing battle.
Hill cruised at #2 singles (6-0, 6-1) and Lamontagne breezed through #3 (6-0, 6-3) to build up the UNE advantage to three.
Next up for the Nor'easters will be a home date with Endicott College (4-3 CNE) on Tuesday with first serves just after 3 p.m.
