Nor'easters power past Monks, 3-0

Statistics

STANDISH, Maine -- The University of New England women's volleyball squad dispatched of Saint Joseph's College by a 3-0 margin (25-21, 25-20, 25-19) at the Alfond Center on Wednesday evening (Oct. 15).

The Nor'easters (10-8) got back at the Monks (10-10) to even the season series, after SJC rallied for a four-set result at UNE during the opening weekend of the year.

Chloe Miracle paced the visitors with 14.5 points, spread out over nine kills (.450 hitting percentage, 0 errors), three aces, and two solo blocks. She also had the second-highest total of digs in the match with 11, behind only the 12 digs of Hayley Shult, who registered UNE's lone double-double by notching 14 assists, as well.

Ellijah Hanley and Kendall Gallaugher chipped in with eight and six kills, respectively, while Kailyn Reilly, Josie Eliot, and Hannah Nowell added four apiece.

Lylah Shumway and Kelsey Bradshaw joined Miracle with multiple aces to help the cause. Defensively, Bradshaw contributed nine digs and Abby Zamora eight, in addition to 11 assists and a pair of kills.

For St. Joe's, Greta Mackintosh had 13 kills and 11 digs. Kylie Giakoumis turned in a couple of blocks, while Maddie Garrett tallied two aces and 11 assists.

An ace by Miracle gave the visitors their first advantage of the night at 18-17 in the 1st set, and winners from five different players helped keep the edge to get out in front. UNE was up one (16-15) in a back-and-forth 2nd before an 8-1 stretch provided some separation on the way to a two-set cushion. Early in the 3rd, one of Shumway's aces, a block by Miracle and Reilly, and a kill from Miracle in a four-point span was enough of a burst to give the Nor'easters the lead for good at 8-4.

UNE is back home next Wednesday (7 p.m.) to face Wentworth Institute of Technology in league action.
