BIDDEFORD, Maine -- A three-goal 2nd quarter propelled the University of New England field hockey team to an important 4-1 Conference of New England (CNE) victory over Western New England University at Blue Bolt Field on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 11).

With their fifth consecutive win, the Nor'easters (8-5) are now 3-2 in CNE action and in a three-way tie for third place in the standings. UNE holds the head-to-head result against both tied squads -- which now includes the Golden Bears (8-6, 3-2) -- and the combined record of the remaining schedule in league play is 1-9.

The hosts took the lead in the 17th minute, cashing in on a penalty corner play when Shelly Tremblay found the stick of Kate Kelso crashing the net on the weak side [Watch]. All of Kelso's four goals this season have come in the last three contests.

It took just 2:27 for the advantage to double (2-0), as Kelso eluded a trap on the sideline with a centering feed to Abby Stevens, who split the defense for a 25-yard run and put a backhand flip past the goalie [Watch]. Four corners later in the 26th minute, the Nor'easters struck again off the stick of Micaela Jacobs. Tremblay received the insert and went for an aerial, which Jacobs nicked at its apex before it dropped over the keeper [Watch].

Western New England got one back from Mackenna Cooke in the 3rd period, but that was the last shot allowed by UNE. For the match, total attempts were 17-4 in favor of the home side (9-2 on goal) and corners wound up at 13-2.

Riley Zielinski added some insurance in the 58th minute, chasing down a lead pass from Stevens to tap it around the goalie into the right corner of the cage [Watch].

Greta Jennison made one stop for the Nor'easters to improve her personal ledger to 5-1, while Alex Tardugno had five saves on the other end for the Golden Bears.

UNE gets right back to it on Sunday (1 p.m.) with a visit from Wheaton College, which is led by former UNE midfielder Brooke Marshall '17.
