BIDDEFORD, Maine –
Madi Robito netted the game-winning goal fewer than two minutes into overtime, leading the University of New England field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Keene State, handing the Owls their first loss of the season, on Saturday afternoon at Blue Bolt Field.
After a scoreless first half, the Nor'easters (4-5, 0-1 CNE) grabbed a 1-0 lead with
Laney LeBlanc's goal in the 43rd minute of action. In the 55th minute, the Owls (9-1, 0-1 LEC) tallied the equalizer and ultimately forced overtime. UNE came up with the first penalty corner of the overtime period and capitalized as Robito deflected
Makena Valentine's initial shot past Keene State keeper Clara Gorman to seal the exciting victory.
Dawn DeWeese-Moss made three saves in-goal for UNE and was aided by several impressive plays from the Nor'easter defense, including a defensive save by
Micaela Jacobs in the early minutes of the fourth quarter to keep the Owls off the board. Gorman totaled seven saves for Keene State.
UNE's first goal, like Robito's game-winner, came from a penalty corner with
Laney LeBlanc receiving a feed from Valentine and hammering home a one-time shot. (
Watch) The Nor'easters' lead disappeared with Hannah Wood's game-tying goal with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. UNE had two more penalty corners with the score knotted 1-1, but were unable to capitalize in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
Saturday's victory avenged a 1-0 road loss UNE suffered to Keene State last season. The Nor'easters have now defeated the Owls in three of the last four meetings.
UNE returns to Conference of New England action with a trip to Nichols on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 12 p.m.
