BIDDEFORD, Maine – With fewer than two minutes remaining in regulation,
Gianna Korisianos' first career goal proved to be the game-winner for the University of New England field hockey team in a 3-2 victory over Husson on Tuesday night at Blue Bolt Field.
The Nor'easters (3-3) and the Eagles (3-3) had been deadlocked at 2-2 since the 25th minute of action. UNE capitalized on a penalty corner in the 59th minute with Korisianos redirecting
Laney LeBlanc's shot past Husson keeper Maria Levesque. It was all the Nor'easters would need to claim their fifth straight win over the Eagles, dating back to the 2014 season.
UNE, which led 2-0 in the second quarter, quickly saw its lead evaporate with two Husson goals in a span of less than four minutes. A scoreless third quarter, including Levesque's save on
Makena Valentine's penalty stroke, set the stage for Korisianos' late-game heroics.
Valentine got the better of the Eagles on her first of two penalty strokes on the evening, which came in the eighth minute and handed UNE a 1-0 lead. (
Watch) The Nor'easters extended their lead with
Madi Robito's goal midway through the second quarter. (
Watch) Late second-quarter tallies from Maddie Perkins and Tessa Capozzoli drew Husson even, 2-2 before halftime.
The Nor'easters are back at home at Saturday, Sept. 21, opening conference play against Endicott at 12 p.m.
