Gulls edge Nor'easters in CNE opener, 1-0

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Tori Swanson scored the only goal of the contest with under 10 minutes to play as Endicott College clipped the University of New England, 1-0, in the first game of the Conference of New England (CNE) field hockey slate on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 21) at Blue Bolt Field.

Swanson collected the ball in transition just inside midfield and carried it down the left side before a last-second backhand tap between the defender on her shoulder and the on-rushing goalie. It was Swanson's 11th marker of the season -- topping Division III in the category.

UNE (3-4, 0-1 CNE) pushed back with a couple of bursts down the stretch, but could not get one past EC's Faith Minickene, who, in her first career start, made six of her 11 saves in the 4th period.

The Gulls (4-3, 1-0 CNE) finished with slight advantages in total shots (14-13) and penalty corners (5-4). Between the pipes for the Nor'easters, Dawn DeWeese-Moss turned in a solid eight stops, including a breakaway denial of Swanson late in the 2nd frame [Watch]. Micaela Jacobs contributed one defensive save in the 3rd quarter.

UNE returns to some non-league matches before more CNE action, beginning with a home date against Wellesley College on Wednesday (6 p.m.).
