Bates narrowly defeats UNE, 1-0

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Bates' 59th-minute goal was enough to earn a 1-0 victory over the University of New England men's soccer team on Tuesday evening at Hazard Field. The Nor'easters had a chance to tie the match in the 90th minute with a penalty kick, but Bruno Correia's attempt was turned away by Bates keeper George Nassar.

After a scoreless first half, and one that featured a handful of scoring opportunities for both sides, the Bobcats broke through with Tife Agunloye's game-winning goal early in the second frame. UNE was without a chance to net an equalizer until the 89:05 mark when a Bates (3-0-0) foul provided the Nor'easters (1-3-1) the opportunity for a penalty kick. Nassar, making one of his three saves on the evening, dove to his right to deny Correia.

The Nor'easters final chance was a 90th-minute corner kick, but the Bates defense stiffened once again and the shutout victory was preserved.

UNE keeper Sean McCarthy totaled six saves, including an impressive diving stop in the final minutes of the first half. Nick Reffel and Zade Tincher, in addition to Correia's penalty kick, accounted for the Nor'easters' shots on goal.

UNE plays its second of back-to-back home games on Saturday, Sept. 14 when it hosts UMaine Farmington at 1 p.m.
