BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England field hockey team scored all of its goals during a 14-minute span in the latter portion of the first half to defeat the University of Southern Maine, 4-0, to open up the new year on Friday (Aug. 30) at Blue Bolt Field.
After
Makena Valentine broke the seal on the scoreboard in the 14th minute of action, the Nor'easters (1-0) went up 2-0 less than two minutes into the 2nd quarter on a goal by
Madi Robito [Watch].
Lily Clough assisted both scores.
Valentine then netted a penalty stroke, and Robito setup the first collegiate goal by
Riley Zielinski to make the margin four with a few minutes left until halftime

UNE is now 10-3 all-time against the Huskies (0-1); the previous meeting was back in 2016.
Valentine added a defensive save in the 4th period to support goalie
Dawn DeWeese-Moss, who was called on to make three saves for the shutout.
On the other side for USM, Eleanor Folsom totaled seven stops over 45 minutes, and Katie Hanlon logged four the rest of the way. Jenessa Foster made the initial stop of the contest with a defensive save midway through the 1st frame.Â
Overall, the hosts racked up a 26-5 advantage in total shots, and earned 12 more penalty corners than Southern Maine (17-5).
The Nor'easters are back at it on Wednesday (7 p.m.) when No.16 Bowdoin College comes into town.
