Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Makena Valentine hammered home a shot from the top of the circle less than two minutes into overtime to give the University of New England a 3-2 field hockey triumph over No.16 Bowdoin College at Blue Bolt Field on Wednesday night (Sep. 4). Dawn DeWeese-Moss supplied 13 saves to backstop the upset.

After nearly 49 minutes without a shot attempt, the Nor'easters (2-0) earned a penalty corner in the extra session to setup the deciding tally. Gianna Korisianos put the ball in play and Shelly Tremblay positioned it for Valentine to tuck a drive just inside the left post for her third goal of the season. [Watch]

It marks UNE's fifth-ever win over a nationally-ranked foe, and the second time one came against the Polar Bears (2-7 in the all-time series). Back in 2017, the Nor'easters shutout a No.11 Bowdoin squad, also in overtime.

The hosts jumped on Bowdoin out of the gate, striking twice in a span of 2:24 on corners in the latter stages of the 1st quarter, during which UNE had a 4-2 edge in shots. First it was Lily Clough slotting a feed from Tremblay inside the right post [Watch], and then, on a slightly broken play, Laney LeBlanc received a pass on the left side from Kennedy St. Pierre and found a seam through the crease into the far side of the cage [Watch]. It was the first marker of the season for Clough, and the first collegiate goal for LeBlanc.

From there, the Nor'easter defense had to hang on as the visitors found their stride. Mackay Bommer split the difference for Bowdoin in the 21st minute, making it 2-1. In the 3rd period, shortly after Korisianos helped out DeWeese-Moss with a defensive save, the Polar Bears drew even in the 43rd minute when Olivia Cunningham found a rebound at the right post.

DeWeese-Moss added three more stops in the 4th, while Micaela Jacobs provided a pair of defensive saves to support the cause and keep things level at the end of regulation.

All told, shot attempts were 31-5 in favor of the Polar Bears (0-1), and penalty corners were 12-5. Bowdoin goalie Lauren O'Donald recorded one save.

UNE next welcomes in No.17 Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday (1 p.m.) -- the second of six opponents on the schedule that found a ranking in the NFHCA preseason poll.
