BANGOR, Maine -- Ana Lang and Danielle Masterson combined for 19 strikeouts against nine hits and one walk as Husson University topped the University of New England in a non-conference softball doubleheader, 3-0 and 2-0, on Saturday afternoon (May 4) at O'Keefe Field.
The Eagles (30-4) have now won their last 25 outings, while the Nor'easters conclude the regular season with a record of 12-28. Out of the seven squads listed in the latest NCAA Region I rankings, Husson was second, surrounded by six NESCAC members. Five of UNE's opponents are currently ranked between Region I and Region II, and the Nor'easters held the toughest strength of schedule in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC).Â
Hannah Irons led all players on the day with three hits, and
Becca Dumont recorded one in each contest. For the hosts, Tori Exel and Katie Raymond had hits in both matches; Exel accounted for three of the runs batted in for her side.
After leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the 1st inning of
GAME 1 (HUS 3-0), the Eagles survived a couple of two-out singles in the UNE 3rd before plating two in the last half of the frame. Raymond singled and scored on a double by Jess Pomerleau, who then came in on a single by Exel. Again, the hosts stranded three on the bases.
Kiara McLeod's second hit led off the Husson 6th and eventually translated into making it 3-0, before the Nor'easters got out of the inning and another bases loaded situation with a 5-2-3 double-play.
Emma Koenig started the UNE 7th with a single, but the visitors could not cash in. In the circle for the Eagles, Masterson surrendered four hits and a walk while fanning seven to get the win.
For the Nor'easters, Irons shared the game-high of two hits.
Mo Kinsella took the setback, yielding five hits and five walks; she retired the side, in order, twice over her five innings.
Husson did its scoring right at the top of
GAME 2 (HUS 2-0), as a pair of walks set up Exel for a one-out triple to the wall in right field.
UNE had a single from
Grace Tutt and double by
Abby Walsh in the 2nd, only to see Lang strike out the next two and get out of the jam. Lang and Raymond has two-out hits in the bottom of the 2nd, but couldn't move any further. After Tutt began another inning with a single in the 4th, to no avail, Husson filled the bases with two away without converting.
Down the stretch, Lang struck out the last four batters she faced to seal it, winding up with 12 against five hits and no walks.
The Nor'easters out-hit the Eagles, 5-4, as
Kara MacDonald went the distance in the circle.
Next up: UNE will visit Suffolk University on Tuesday (3 p.m.) in an elimination game of the 2024 CCC Softball Championship.
