WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- The University of Hartford received 12 shutout innings from Carly Mayhood and Alex Hassett to log results of 8-0 (5 innings) and 3-0 against the University of New England in softball action on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 14) at UH Softball Field.
The Hawks (17-6-1) are the newest members of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) but are still in the process of reclassifying from Division I to Division III, and so the games does not count towards the 2024 league standings.
The Nor'easters (7-17) return home to square off with Suffolk University on Monday (3 p.m.) in a CCC doubleheader.
Mayhood struck out eight in
GAME 1 (HART 8-0), while allowing four hits without a free pass over five innings. Two of the hits came in the final frame, including the second single by
Abby Walsh. UNE's other hits were two-out double by
Delaney Whitten in the 4th, and
Becca Dumont in the 5th.
Mara Sczecienski and Adelie Beebe each had two hits and two RBI for Hartford, which got another two hits apiece from Sydney Matz and Sarah Serrano. The Hawks scored one in the 1st, two on a double by Beebe in the 3rd, three in the 4th, and two in the 5th.
Three of the runs scored were unearned against UNE pitching. Starter
Liv Arvidson went four innings and fanned a pair in the loss.
Hassett and
Kara MacDonald battled from the circle in
GAME 2 (HART 3-0), which went scoreless into the 4th inning until a two-out RBI-single by Bridget Bernard. Sczecienski came through with a run-scoring double to make it 2-0 in the 5th, and a Shailynn Williams triple combined with an error set the margin at three in the 6th.
Hassett picked up six strikeouts and scattered three hits and a walk in the win for the Hawks. Sczecienski and Azya Walker shared the game-high of two hits on the offensive side.
MacDonald yielded the two earned runs and struck out three in the setback. Whitten,
Olivia Howe, and
Elise Connor accounted for the Nor'easter hits.
