Nor'easters blank Wentworth to open CCC play

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Four different players each tallied three goals to pace the University of New England in a 20-0 shutout of Wentworth Institute of Technology in a mutual Commonwealth Coast Conference opener Wednesday afternoon (March 27) at Blue Bolt Field.

The Nor'easters earned their third consecutive victory to improve to 3-5 overall, while the Leopards are winless in four outings.

Morgan White, Kimmy Staniar, Sydney Balotin and Emma Collingwood notched three goals apiece to lead the balanced UNE attack. Abby McHallam and Barrie Guertin each scored twice, while Halle Huizenga, Paige DeVries, Nicole DePodesta and Emilia Keane found the scoring column once.

UNE put the game away early, converting eight times in the opening quarter. The Nor'easters would go on to build a 12-0 cushion at halftime. It was the fifth time keeping an opponent off of the scoreboard in program history (last in 2011).

The stat sheet was slanted heavily in favor of the hosts, with UNE holding a significant margin in shots (38-6), ground balls (33-17) and draw controls (18-6). Balotin added to her three-goal performance with four caused turnovers and three draw controls. White led all players with eight draw controls, while DeVries was tops with four ground balls.

Emma Thompson and Jenna Trafford split time in goal for the Nor'easters, each recording one save. Wentworth's Lily Cohen stopped eight shots that came her way.

Both teams return to action this Saturday with CCC contests. The Leopards host Western New England University at noon, while UNE entertains Roger Williams University at 4 p.m.
