BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Bridgewater State University had the last two goals of the 2nd quarter and then the first of the 3rd to separate just enough from the University of New England for a 13-8 women's lacrosse result on Friday (Mar. 1) at Blue Bolt Field.
After yielding a player-down goal to the Nor'easters for the initial score, Camryn Gonsalves and Meredith Sylvia each had a pair through 15 minutes to give BSU a 4-2 edge. Gonsalves and Erin McIntyre extended it to 6-2 for the visitors, but by the 10:01 mark of the 2nd, a couple of free-position goals from
Kelsey Hartigan helped UNE narrow the gap to 6-5. McIntyre and
Meagan Donovan traded tallies, but then McIntyre and Savannah Herrington provided the three-goal cushion at the break.
Gonsalves netted her fourth score to make it 10-6 -- the only goal in the first seven-plus minutes of the 3rd frame.
McIntyre matched Gonsalves with four goals, and added four ground balls and four draw controls. Sylvia totaled three goals with game-best seven draws. Laura Giovaniello made five saves for the Bears (1-2).
Hartigan and
Morgan White, making their first appearances of the season, ended with two scores for the Nor'easters (0-3), as did Donovan.
Barrie Guertin and
Abby McHallam also put one on the scoreboard for the hosts. White additionally collected five draw controls,
Elizabeth Guertin picked up four ground balls, and
Siobhan Smith caused three turnovers.
Jenna Trafford put up 11 saves.
UNE is off until Wednesday when Bates College visits for a 4 p.m. match.
