Strong 1st half propels Nichols past UNE

DUDLEY, Mass. -- Nichols College raced out to a 47-16 halftime lead and cruised from there for a 92-56 Commonwealth Coast Conference men's basketball win over the University of New England Saturday afternoon (Feb. 3) at the Nichols Athletics Center.

The six-time defending CCC champion Bison extended their winning streak to 12 games, while upping their overall record to 18-3. Nichols sits atop the conference standings with an 11-1 mark.

Jason Ofcarcik paced Nichols' balanced scoring attack with a game-high 19 points. He was perfect from the floor (9-for-9) and added seven rebounds. Dominic Mello hit three 3-pointers to finish with 13 points, while Tavon Jones and Simon Percy scored 11 points apiece and combined for 16 boards.

Adam Lux was the lone UNE player in double figures. He finished with 18 points in just 23 minutes of action before fouling out. Kha Cao Ra James contributed nine points, three steals and a pair of blocked shots.

Nichols poured in the first 13 points of the contest over the opening 3:44 and never looked back. Leading 23-9 midway through the half, the hosts closed with a 24-7 barrage to take a 47-16 cushion into the locker room. UNE was unable cut the deficit to less than 24 the rest of the way.

For the game Nichols shot a blistering 62.1 percent (36 of 58) from the floor, while limiting UNE to just 31.8 percent (21 of 66) accuracy. The Bison dominated the backboards (50-22) and had 26 assists on their 36 field goals.

The Nor'easters (5-16, 0-13) return to action Tuesday with a 7:30 p.m. road game at Curry College.
