Nor'easters lock down Hartford for 60-39 triumph

Statistics

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- The University of New England women's basketball team limited the University of Hartford to just 22 percent shooting from the field in a 60-39 win to close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 17) at Chase Family Arena.

It was statistically the best defensive effort of the year for the Nor'easters (19-6), who are unbeaten in their last eight outings. The Hawks actually hit more shots from long range (6) than they did inside the arc (5), and were additionally hampered by 21 turnovers. The 39 points allowed by UNE matched the lowest by an opponent this season.

The first meeting between the squads, right after the holiday break, was only a two-point contest. Hartford (10-14) is the newest member of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) but is still in the process of reclassifying from Division I to Division III, and so the game does not count towards the 2023-24 league standings.

Leading the way for the visitors was Jordyn Franzen with 17 points and seven rebounds. She notched the initial eight points of the day for the Nor'easters in a span of 75 seconds, and the UNE cushion was 17-9 through 10 minutes.

Franzen, Sydney Jenisch, and Gabby Soter evenly accounted for all of the offense in the 2nd quarter, gaining one point on the Hawks (31-22). Despite UNE connecting at a 27-percent rate on field goals in the 3rd, the advantage nearly doubled by the end of the period (46-29), and the spread topped out at 28 (58-30) before the midway mark of the 4th.

Soter and Jenisch wound up with 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the winners. Kaylee Beyor contributed nine points and nine caroms, while Faye Veilleux added seven points and three steals.

For the hosts, Adrianna McCoy had 15 points and Ella Marchesani tossed in 10.

The Nor'easters will now prepare for the opening round of the 2024 CCC Women's Basketball Championship on Tuesday (7 p.m.) when they host Gordon College in the No.2/No.7 matchup. UNE swept the season series against the Fighting Scots with scores of 75-63 and 74-49.
