Vogel to be inducted into Maine Sports Hall of Fame

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Former Westbrook College men's basketball student-athlete Derek Vogel '96 (Cumberland, Maine) will be enshrined in the Maine Sports Hall of Fame on September 15 at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, as the four-member Class of 2024 is celebrated.

The Westbrook College athletics program spanned just six years prior to the 1996 merger with the University of New England, but Vogel and the Wildcats made a significant impact during that time.

Vogel was a four-year starter and three-year captain on teams that won 71 percent of their contests (102 games), and his 3,046 career points remain a Maine collegiate basketball record. At the time of his graduation, he held NAIA Division II career records for scoring and field goals made.

As a senior in 1995-96, Vogel totaled 983 points (along with 954 rebounds) to lead the NAIA at 28.8 points per game. During his junior season of 1994-95, he notched a 45-point outing, which was the highest single-game total in the combined history of UNE, Westbrook, and St. Francis College until 2018-19.

Vogel was a two-time NAIA All-America selection, a two-time conference Player of the Year, and an all-league performer each of his four years. The Westbrook teams won Mayflower Conference titles in 1993-94, 1994-95, and 1995-96, and reached the NAIA National Championship in both 1993-94 and 1994-95.

He went on to play professionally overseas for nine years, including four within the top division in Germany.

In 2008, Vogel was inducted into the UNE Varsity Club Athletics Hall of Fame. The most-celebrated squad from Westbrook (93-94) that he was part of was later inducted in 2015. He was also inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013, and the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019, and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Hall of Fame in 2023.
