WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – After facing an 11-point deficit with fewer than eight minutes remaining in the second half, the University of New England men's basketball team rallied to earn a 90-84 road victory over Hartford on Saturday for its first Conference of New England win of the season.
Jaelen Jackson, one of three Nor'easters to finish with 18 points, grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to record his first career double-double.
Adam Lux, who scored 15 in the second half, and
Jack Pyzynski both matched Jackson in the scoring column.
Adrian Torres closely followed with 14 points, along with seven assists. Hartford (2-6, 0-2 CNE) also had four scorers in double figures, with Kaosi Chijoke's 18 points leading the charge.
UNE (3-6, 1-1 CNE) quickly cut the Hawks' 73-62 lead to just three points (73-70) with scores on three straight trips, including a three-point play by Lux followed by a
Jimmy Hulland triple. Hartford responded to grow its lead as large as six in the coming minutes, but the Nor'easters eventually claimed their first lead (82-81) when Jackson scored with just over a minute remaining. Another and-one from Lux gave UNE an 85-81 advantage, and after a Hartford turnover, Pyzynski knocked down two free throws to put the game out of reach for the Hawks.
UNE shot a season-best 45 percent (9-of-20) from deep as Pyzynski knocked down three of his five attempts from beyond the arc and Jackson was 2-for-3.
Hartford earned a 44-36 lead in the final minute of a back-and-forth first half before UNE scored on consecutive possessions to salvage a four-point deficit entering the break, and later grabbed a 46-44 lead on a Pyzynski bucket. Hartford's Drew Stack drained a 3-pointer coming out of a timeout to allow the Hawks reclaim the lead, and start an 18-5 run that would end with the hosts holding the game's largest lead (73-62).
The Nor'easters now have back-to-back wins at Hartford, dating back to the 2023-24 regular season finale when they earned an 89-80 win inside Chase Arena.
UNE looks for another conference road victory on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. against Gordon.
