WORCESTER, Mass. -- The University of New England women's ice hockey team overcame a 2-0 deficit to tie the game in the third period before eventually dropping a 3-2 non-conference decision to Worcester State University Friday evening (Dec. 6) at the Fidelity Bank Ice Center.
After a scoreless opening period, the host Lancers (5-4) tallied twice in the second to take control. Caroline Melanson tallied on the power play at 7:41 to make the score 1-0 before Cailey Ryan struck at the 15:24 mark to double the Worcester State advantage. Lea Gaspar assisted on each of the host's goals.
UNE cut its deficit in half early in the third period when
Amanda Forziati notched her fourth goal of the season.
Hannah Humes and
Hannah Keating were credited with assists on the scoring play. The Nor'easters drew even midway through the period as
Lainie Lemieux set up
Anna O'Neill for her first goal of the season.
Worcester State would respond less than five minutes later when Emily Johns provided the Lancers with the game-winner.
Despite falling short on the scoreboard, UNE controlled play for the greater portion of the contest, racking up a 66-17 advantage in shots on goal. Winning goaltender Kelsey Czerniawski made 64 saves for the Lancers, while
Kaleigh Laurendeau turned aside 14 shots for the Nor'easters.
UNE (4-6) has less than 24 hours of rest before hosting Bowdoin College tomorrow. Puck drop at the Harold Alfond Forum in Biddeford is scheduled for 4 p.m.
