WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College scored four times in the 3rd period to survive a tough test presented by the University of New England, 4-2, in women's ice hockey action Tuesday night (Dec. 3) at Jack Kelley Rink.
The Mules (3-2) trailed for almost 35 minutes before Courtney Schumacher got the hosts on the board at 1:20 of the final frame, but then Nor'easters (4-5) bounced right back 15 seconds later and the visitors then led for another six-plus minutes.
Adria Tebo punched one in from the doorstop to restore the edge for UNE (2-1), with assists from
Hannah Keating and
Jamie DuPont.
Abby Wick brought Colby back level with 12 minutes remaining, and then Beth Sinson put a wrist shot from the left circle into the top-right corner with 8:04 to play to provide the Mules with their first lead of the evening at 3-2.
The Nor'easters went on their first power play at the 17:14 mark and fired off six shots during the advantage -- the last three made it through to, and were stopped by, Colby goalie Grace Caligiuri. UNE kept the pressure on and tested Caligiuri twice in the moments that followed, and then brought on an extra skater for an offensive zone faceoff with 18 seconds showing. However, after two chances missed just wide, Schumacher was able to clear the zone and deposit an empty-netter as time essentially expired.
Total shot attempts favored the Mules by a 95-31 spread, with a 45-15 difference in those that reached the target. UNE's
Kirsten DiCicco turned away 41 shots behind skaters who blocked another 24 tries -- four apiece of which were credited to
Jamie Ryan and
Mackenzie O'Leary.
The opening score of the contest belonged to Keating, who fired from a low angle up over the near-side shoulder of Caligiuri with 6:31 elapsed. The first goal of the year for the graduate transfer was assisted by
Hannah Humes and
Amanda Forziati.
Caligiuri ended with 13 saves for Colby, which received votes in the latest release of the USCHO Top 15 Poll.
The Nor'easters will look to get back to the .500 mark on Friday with a trip to Worcester State University.
