Statistics

WENHAM, Mass. – The University of New England women's basketball team outscored Gordon, 20-11, in the fourth quarter of Tuesday evening's Conference of New England clash to come away with a 68-65 road victory.

Maddy Werner, who matched Gabby Soter for the team lead with a career-high 14 points, scored nine in the fourth quarter to help the Nor'easters (5-5, 2-1 CNE) finish strong against the Fighting Scots (2-6, 0-3 CNE), who ended the third quarter with a 54-48 advantage.

Soter was 10-of-15 at the charity stripe for UNE, which attempted 34 free throws to Gordon's 17. In addition to her 14 points, Soter tied Faye Veilleux for the game high in the rebounding column with eight. The Nor'easters totaled 20 offensive rebounds, including a crucial board by Soter in the final 30 seconds with UNE holding a 65-63 edge, forcing the Scots to foul. Soter then knocked down both free throws to create a two-possession lead.

Gordon's Ami Rivera led all scorers with 18, going 7-for-10 from the field and knocking down 2-of-3 attempts from deep. Brynn Barnhard and Naomi Nicholson followed with 14 and 13, respectively. Gordon shot better than 40 percent (8-of-19) from 3-point range, including a perfect 3-for-3 effort in the third quarter that helped the Scots outscore the Nor'easters by a margin of 21-13 and recover from a 35-33 halftime deficit.

UNE, which led by as many as eight in the second quarter, took its first lead of the fourth (56-55) when Werner knocked down an elbow jumper at the 5:35 mark. After a Gordon turnover on the next possession, Soter flipped momentum with a three-point play. Trailing 63-60 in the final two minutes, Barnhard tied the game for the Scots with a 3-pointer, but Werner had the answer on the other end to put UNE back on top for the duration.

The Nor'easters now have four straight wins over Gordon, having swept the 2023-24 regular season series before besting the Scots in the opening round of the conference tournament.

UNE pauses for a few weeks before returning to the court against defending Conference of New England champion Western New England, which currently receives votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25, on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m.
